I speak German and Dutch fluently, at least, I’m supposed to because I’ve got a degree in those languages. Mind you, I often forget bits of my native language, English, so I guess I’m unable to really speak ANY language. I’ve been to French, Spanish, Russian and Japanese classes at various points in the past but have mostly totally forgotten those. I’ve tried to teach myself Welsh, Irish, Basque, Norwegian and probably several more but failed miserably. I’ve also been to classes in Luxembourgish and Niederdeutsch/Low German and haven’t failed too miserably at them, mostly because they’re quite similar to Standard German, Dutch, or both. And I can understand Flemish, Afrikaans and Frisian to a certain extent because of the languages I already speak.
Swedish is next on my deranged radar because I keep going to Sweden and think it’s only polite to learn the language. Being British, I will happily learn a language out of politeness. I’ve also always wanted to learn the Celtic languages, especially Welsh and Irish, so maybe I could do that after I’ve poked around the Scandinavian ones for a bit. I have a fascination with several Native American languages, Basque, Mongolian and Finnish but I’m a bit too scared to learn them, so I’ll admire them from afar.
I HAVE A LANGUAGES ADDICTION. I HAVE NO OTHER HOBBIES EXCEPT EATING CAKE. I NEED HELP.

Consider yourself lucky! Svend and Uncle Bob KEEPING TALKING DANISH ALL THE TIME. And Uncle Bob speaks nothing else because he hates things that aren’t Danish. Luckily Svend can translate what he’s saying.

Oh wow, I wish I could speak Dutch! I taught it myself (just had a major argument with myself about whether it should be ‘it myself’ or ‘myelf it’ in that sentence, or whether it should be something else entirely to avoid such confusion but then I can’t think of a good alternative phrasing) for a while a few years ago, and while now I can read it fairly well as it’s kind of similar to German, the pronunciation is TERRIFYING. I made Dutch friends in Germany and every time they spoke Dutch I was literally like O_O.
I’d like to speak a really obscure language. Like Icelandic or Vietnamese. My friend studied Thai at uni and is now fluent, it seems really incredible. I quite like being able to speak German though, for some reason people seem quite impressed by it.

I keep forgetting my Dutch, it makes me sad! The pronunciation is OK once you’ve got the hang of it. I mean, it does sound TERRIFYING, but it’s fairly consistent at least. And if you can’t do the GGGGGGGGGG sound at the back of your mouth, you can just pretend you’re Flemish or from the south. And if you CAN do the GGGGGGGGG sound, it’s quite fun!
German is impressive though, I think even people who’ve never study it have heard of the hideously confusing German grammar. Also, I FORGOT ABOUT ICELANDIC. That’s another one I love!

I want to learn an obscure language too! Icelandic has long been a linguistic crush of mine, but I am also for some reason quite enamoured of the idea of learning Basque, even though I know it would be very difficult and useless.
